Hi,
building my own computer. just got my motherboard 2 weeks ago, but lost the comp case screws. I installed everything , fired it up and well - i could smell a distinct burning smell. I immediatley shut it down , and took it apart and ordered case screws. Should i order a motherboard though? Is it possible for my motherboard to operate after it has short circuted with my computer case?
Computer case screws? Or are you speaking of the screws that go thru the motherboard, and hold it down to the Support Plate? (They screw into the brass {Usually} standoff's on the Support Plate. Standoff's are also referred to as Spacers.) This IS the thing you MUST check before installing anything else. The standoff's,(Or spacers), must match the holes in the motherboard. If they don't un-screw them,(Turn to the left),and put them into the correct corresponding holes. Hold the motherboard above the Support Plate, and line the standoff's up with the mobo's,(Motherboard's), holes. If you don't, the exposed solder terminals on the bottom of the mobo, can,(And will!), short out, if they touch standoff's that aren't supposed to be there. Also read the Motherboard Manual, and see if Fiber Washers are supposed to be put in-between the standoffs and the motherboard. I could be wrong but I thought mobo's come with standoff's and screws!
(Also be Darn sure, you DE-STATIC yourself before taking any of the parts out of their Anti-Static bags! Plus before you reach inside your computer case, and if you get up, and walk away, then return to your computer build. STATIC! If you don't have a cheap $4 to $10 ESD wriststrap, at least touch the metal frame of the computer case. Do it as described above.) Should you buy another mobo? Probably! But before you do, try this mobo again. What's the harm?
Edit: You may need more than a new mobo! You may need a new processor, ram, and graphics card! (If applicable) Power supply may have fried, and harddrive too! (Just what you needed to hear, huh! lol! Sorry! You just have to do this stuff right, the FIRST time. I hope you just install the mobo correctly with the SCREWS, and everything goes alright for you. Hopefully, you can just put it down as a bad mistake in your learning curve!)Is it possible for my motherboard to operate after it has short circuted with my computer case?
Well, how bad exactly was the damage? It may be just the new hardware giving off a distinct smell that goes away with use. It could be fried though from a small static charge. I would try it out when you get the new screws and if you get no response (or a constant beeping noise upon hitting the power button), the motherboard looks like it has been permanently damaged. So, therefore, you'd need to invest in a new one.
Was the board ever shocked with static? Is it raised off of the case with some type of washer or brass? Shocked motherboards are usually toast, which is why you never build on carpet and always make sure you're grounded.
Most likely your motherboard is gone. There are too many part on the board that you may never find out what has been damaged on your short circuit. I had same experience before, with smell of smoke is always bad sign, sorry!
