Is it bad if the side of my computer case isn't on there?

One side of the case isn't on there cause we put in a new hard drive and we we're too lazy to put the side of the case back on.

Is it bad that the computer has been sitting there like that being used?Is it bad if the side of my computer case isn't on there?
The problem with that is HEAT. The sides must be attached so that fans can remove the heat within the box. If the sides are not there, heat still can build up because the air circulating past the components is not present it just dissipates from the components alot slower. Plus you risk something touching the board or any other electrical part which may be susceptible to ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) which is like a static shock when you rub your feet on the carpet and touch something or someone. VERY DANGEROUS. Or just basic dust and dirt can find its way in the open box. If you must operate your computer without the covers, remove it from the floor and bring it up on the desk where it can be monitored. Your computer can run without the covers but with all the risks mentioned. Is it bad if the side of my computer case isn't on there?
The circuitry in the computer is not as sensitive as people say it is. There are no problems leaving the side off of your computer. I don't even keep it on mine. As long as no one touches the processor itself, not the heatsink but the chip under it, it should be fine. I've even had a computer on my carpet running without a problem, and it wasn't even in a case, just the motherboard and other parts on the floor.
the person who said it allows better ventilation is kinda wrong... thats like putting the air conditioning on in ur car with the windows wide open.

it might keep u cool, but it will cause more problems.

its not a big deal that its open, but you will get more dust and crp in there. just dont leave it off for weeks
That shouldn't do any damage, but a computer is designed to operate with both sides on. This is for cooling purposes. The air flows through the case much better is the sides are on.
It isn't the best idea ever to leave it. You will attract a lot more dust in to the computer which can be damaging to the internal components. I'd take the 5 minutes or less to put it back on.
no, however if the circuits are dusty or get dusty, and it may short-circuit, i have left my case open for years and this hasn't happened and i wont expect it to with someone else
In some ways, it's good because it allows for better ventilation. The only real problem is protecting your PC from dust etc. Every now and again you should make sure that no spiders have made it their home and give it a gentle hoover!
nah, it should be fine.

just try not to get anything stuck in there.

and watch out for small children, the chips in the computer can produce large amounts of heat.
